Remembering Former Hazard Police Chief
Joe Walker Jr., 81, who served as chief of Police in Hazard in the late 1940's and early 1950's, died on November 24th. He was a World War II veteran. After heading the Police Department in Hazard for several years, Walker moved his family to Jeffersonville, Indiana where he worked at the Indiana Ammunition plant until he retired. According to family members, Joe's grandfather - the Reverend John Walker at one time owned most of what is now the Walkertown section of Hazard. Peter's Peak, a well known mountain top in Hazard is said to have been named after Joe's cousin, Jerry Pete Walker. Joe Walker is survived by his two sons; Robert Joe Walker of Seminole, Florida and Charles Walker of St. Petersburg, Florida, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
