Congratulations to Carlene
Shackelford, the first to identify Jim Caudill as Mystery Person
#58. This week marks the 60th anniversary of Caudill's
first game as head coach of the Hazard High School football
team. The game between Hazard and Evarts was played on
September 8th 1960. Hazard won the game 26 to 7 on the old H.B.I.
Field, later known as Collins Field. Some of the players
on his first Hazard team included Bob Lutes, Piercy Turner,
Andrew Luttrell, Gurney Luttrell, Jack Hagan, Glenn Maggard,
Charlie Hines, John Chaney, Bill Cook, Bob Lutes, Don Mosley and
Jimmy Clifton.
Jim Caudill was a native of Newport, Kentucky
and graduated from Newport High School. He attended
Morehead State University from 1939 until 1942. He
enlisted in the Marine Corp for three years during World War
II. He resumed his studies in 1945 and received his A.B.
Degree at Morehead in 1946. Caudill became head football
coach at Louisa in 1946 and remained there until 1950. It
was in 1950 that Caudill was named head football coach at Hazard
High School. Caudill, along with his assistant coach Tony
Salvato, was heard on a weekly sports show on WKIC in
1950. The show's host, Dick Goodlette, talked to the
coaches about the past and upcoming games. Buddy Marcum
served as Hazard's backfield coach and Paul Wright was the line
coach when Caudill first joined the team. The football squad
under Caudill won 70 games and lost only 23, tying four, a
winning average of almost 70%. He produced four All State
football players while coaching in Hazard: Don Sinor, Bob Lindon,
Cat Sizemore and Charles Heinz. Caduill aquired a M.A.
Degree at UK in 1954 In 1960 he replaced H.M. Wosely as
principal of Hazad High School. Caudill later was the
Superintendent of the Hazard City Schools. Harold

I am guessing Jim Caudill, former coach and superintendent of Hazard
Independent Schools. I know he was born in Newport and went to
Morehead. Carlene Shackelford, Hazard, KY
Now I think the Mystery Person is Football Coach Jim
Caudill. Harold
Lloyd Baker, Modesto,CA
Could this be Lewis Sinor? Wilma Nucci, Perry County
How about a few clues to link this person to Hazard? I think
I will cast a vote for Coach Earl "Pop" Collins. Idalee
Hansel, Spartanburg, SC
Could this be Julian Murrill that owned Julian's Department
Store? Carol E. Williams, Perry County
