Congratulations to Carol E. Williams

Carol E Williams of Perry County was the first to identify Mystery Person #51 as Rad Martin.  Martin was born on February 11th 1901 at Carrie in Knott County.  He attended the Knott County Public Schools, Eastern State College and Bowling Green University.  He opened a small store in Sassafrass in 1924.  Two years later he started Martin's Department Store in Vicco.  He later opened Martin's in Nicholasville, Harrodsburg, Morehead, Salyersville and Pineville.  He and his wife, Mrs. Minnie Lee Martin were married on October 1st 1926 in Sassafrass.  Martin also held half interest in the Hazard Furniture Company and was a partner in stores at Grayson and Greenup.  He had a winter home in Sarasota, Florida.   Rad Martin died on April 7th 1956 at the age of 55.

Again, I REALLY think I have the answer.  It is Rad Martin that owned Martin's Department Store in Vicco, KY.  You could buy almost anything you wanted there.  My parents bought me my first little washing machine for Christmas one year at Martin's in Vicco, Ky.  It was very small but it would wash at least one handkerchief or a small doll's dress at one time.  Believe it or not I was gone all day yesterday and didn't get home until this afternoon, so I didn't get to read the mystery until just a few minutes before I posted my entry.  I had lived at Allock, KY when I was younger (now called Vicco) and as soon as I saw  the statement that Rad Martin had said, " you wouldn't have to go to Main Street of Hazard to park".  I just had that "gut" feeling that it had to be Martin's Department Store.  You would be parking on Main Street of Vicco instead.  As I said earlier, you could find almost anything you wanted in that store.  Shoes, women and men's clothes, children's clothes, toys, hardware and many other items.  Martin's department store is one of my fond memories of childhood.  Carol E. Williams, Perry County

Is it Dee Alvin Davis Sr?   The grandfather of Todd, Don, Carolyn, and Dee Davis?  Father-in-law to JoAnn Carte Davis?  Tammy Asher, Hazard, KY

I think it's JoAnn Davis' father, but I don't recall his name.  Tammy in Hazard, KY

I remember, like Tammy, that Morton and Virginia Carte at one time owned part or all of Hazard Furniture.  Then I think it became New Hazard Furniture.  IdaLee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC

R.W. Gibson  Linda Morgan, Frankfort, KY

Deacon Gibson.  Patrick Woods, Hazard, KY

Guessing Don Davis.  Darlene, Richmond, KY

Morton Carte??  Lyndon Combs, Hazard Ky

Is it Morton Carte?  Mary Jo Gregory Edwards, Carmel, In

R.W. Gibson.  L. H. Morgan, Frankfort, KY

Could it be Morton Cart?  Jack B. Martin, Hazard, KY

Well, I have W. E. Mattingly in my mind, but I think he was associated with Ideal Furniture, but I just thought I'd guess his anyhow.  I seem to remember Floyd Hall and his wife, Aileen, owning or working with Hazard Furniture.  Could this be Paul McGrainer, with Martins Dept. Store? IdaLee Hansel, Spartanburg, SC
