Congratulations
to Carol Williams of Perry County, the first to identify Mystery Person #59
as Elmer Davis. Carol has 6 first place wins and one 2nd place
win. Elmer Davis was born in Annville, Kentucky. His family
moved to Perry County when he was a child and they operated a grocery
store at Vicco. He was a World War II veteran and married Margaret
"Marge" McIntyre in 1947. He opened the Elmer Davis Gulf
Service Station in Hazard in 1957. He enjoyed riding a motorcycle
across the country. He satisfied his "need for speed"
with a speedboat at Buckhorn and was an avid race fan, never missing a
Daytona 500 or Indianapolis 500. Elmer Davis was one of Hazard's
best known citizens. He is remembered for his kindness and warmth,
greeting everyone with a smile and a kind word. He died in
1990. Clues on the mystery revealed a connection to the Virginia
Iron Coal and Coke Company where the city of Vicco got its name.
Davis Grocery was located in Vicco. The town was originally known
as Montago.
